What’s Dialysis?

It’s a treatment that takes over your kidney functions if those organs stop doing their job. There are two types of dialysis:

Hemodialysis: Your blood is put through a filter outside your body, cleaned, and then returned to you. This is done either at a dialysis facility or at home.

Peritoneal dialysis: Your blood is cleaned inside your body. A special fluid is put into your abdomen to absorb waste from the blood that passes through small vessels in your abdominal cavity. The fluid is then drained away. This type of dialysis is typically done at home.

Who Needs Dialysis?

If your kidney disease becomes very severe and crosses a point where there’s not enough function to maintain the body, then you need either a transplant or dialysis.

You typically start dialysis when you have symptoms or your lab tests show toxic levels of waste in your blood. Symptoms of kidney failure include nausea, fatigue, swelling, and throwing up.

When you should start dialysis depends on your age, energy level, overall health, lab test results and how willing you are to commit to a treatment plan. Although it can make you feel better and live longer, it involves a lot of your time

Our doctor will let you know when you should start treatment. They’ll also explain which type might work best for you.

The specialization of ophthalmology and its  surgery is concerned with the treatment of the lesions and diseases that occur on the eye from the inside (such as glaucoma and cataract) and the area around the eye (skin masses, eyelids and masses of orbit  behind the eye).

Treatment can be provided via two main routes

  • The path of drugs for diseases that can be treated with medication after a diagnostic approach to the disease and if it is necessary use diagnostic methods B-scan or topography cornea or chromoretinography . For example, we mention using laser treatment for diabetic retinopathy.
  • Surgical pathway for ophthalmic diseases, for example, removal of cataract by ultrasound waves or use of laser to treat several types of vision defects.
  • The science of ophthalmology and its surgury from the medical quickly developed sciences , so patients having medical opthalmic problems are advised to conduct renewed periodic medical consultations

The conservative management options available for strabismus include observation, occlusion, optical, orthoptic exercises and the use of prisms. A summary of the options and the indications for use are available in Figure 1. Some of these options can be used diagnostically and therapeutically, however, only the therapeutic options will be discussed in this article.

Figure 1: A summary of conservative management options for concomitant strabismus.
Management option: Observation
Indications:
  • Well-controlled intermittent deviation in young patients with potential risk of amblyopia
  • Parent / patient refuses treatment
  • Uncertainty of how best to treat, e.g. variable test results
What to do:
  • Regular orthoptic assessments to assess the patient’s VA, control of deviation (e.g. cover test, controlled binocular acuity and Newcastle control score), angle of deviation and BSV.

Management option: Occlusion
Indications:
  • To treat amblyopia
  • To relieve diplopia
What to do:
  • Options include conventional patching or Atropine 1% twice weekly
  • Follow PEDIG guidelines
  • Allow refractive adaptation

Management option: Optical
Indications:
  • To improve VA
  • To improve BSV
What to do:
  • Prescribe the full hypermetropic correction if patient esotropic
  • Trial extra plus lenses (up to +3.00DS) if convergence excess suspected
  • Trial minus lenses (up to -3.00DS) in intermittent distance exotropia
Management option: Orthoptic Exercises
Indications:
  • To improve BSV and alleviate symptoms
  • Wean out of extra lenses and prisms
What to do:
  • For eso deviations, focus on improving negative fusional amplitudes and negative relative vergence
  • For exo deviations, focus on improving convergence, positive fusional amplitudes and positive relative vergence

Management option: Prisms
Indications:
  • To alleviate symptoms and restore BSV
What to do:
  • For eso deviations, base-out (BO) prism
  • For exo deviations, base-in (BI) prism

Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis, surgical prevention, and treatment of different eye disorders. An Ophthalmologist is a medical and surgical specialist, who specializes in treating disorders of the eye, and systemic diseases that manifest in the eye or tissues surrounding it. Ophthalmologists also offer osteopathic treatments which may include the application of corrective lenses to repair vision.

The three most common and dangerous eye diseases are diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration. With the rise in diabetic patients, diabetic retinopathy has evolved into a critical issue for patients between the ages of 40-59.

Ophthalmology Department at South East is helping adult and pediatric patients see the colors of life vividly. The Department offers state-of-the-art treatment for various eye diseases. Our highly qualified and foreign-trained consultants have specialized training in treating cataracts, glaucoma, corneal transplant, cancer of the eye, diseases of the eyelids, retina, and macular hole treatment.
